Multiple Pregnancy Information
Worldwide, the rates of multiple pregnancy have increased
over the last two decades. Multiple pregnancy is associated with risks to both mother
and fetuses. The fetUses are in danger of intrauterine growth retardation
and also show a high incidence of birth defects. Genetic problems are more common in multiple pregnancy. Theres also the danger of preterm birth and its attendant
hazards.
Problems in Mother during Multiple Pregnancy
- Pre-eclampsia is 5 to 10 times more common than in single
pregnancy.
- USG early in pregnancy can determine the type of placenta
in a twin pregnancy. If both twins share the same placenta,
they are monochorionic and carry higher risks.
- Higher order multiples (triplets, quadruplets, quintuplets,
sextuplets) are nowadays largely the result of ovulation
induction. (see Infertility)
MFPR (Multi Petal Pregnancy Reduction):
Mothers carrying quadruplets or more may be offered the
selective destruction of one or more fetuses between 10 and
12 weeks, to allow the healthy gestation of at least one healthy
baby.
