Cushings Syndrome - Symptom, Causes, Treatment of Cushings Syndrome

Cushing's syndrome is a condition that occurs when your body is exposed to high levels of the hormone cortisol for a prolonged period of time. Its main cause is prolonged exposure of the body's tissues to high levels of the hormone cortisol.  Individuals with Cushing syndrome can develop moon facies, facial plethora, supraclavicular fat pads, buffalo hump, truncal obesity, and purple striae. The peak incidence of Cushing syndrome due to either an adrenal or pituitary adenoma occurs in persons aged 25-40 years. Cushing's syndrome happens for two reasons: Medication either causes the body to make too much cortisol, or the medication itself contains extra cortisol and taking it pushes the level above normal and A person's body makes more cortisol than it needs. Cushing's syndrome can occur in anyone but more commonly it occurs in adults aged 20-50 years. When the adrenal glands become overactive, the normal healthy control of Cortisol breaks down. When too much Cortisol is produced, Cushings is the result.

Symptoms of Cushings Syndrome

Common symptoms of Cushing's syndrome include upper body obesity, severe fatigue and muscle weakness, high blood pressure, backache, elevated blood sugar, easy bruising, and bluish-red stretch marks on the skin. Children tend to be obese with slowed growth rates.

Treatment of Cushings Syndrome

Treatment of Cushings Syndrome mainly depends on the specific reason for cortisol excess and may  include surgery, radiation, chemotherapy or the use of cortisol-inhibiting drugs. Surgery or radiotherapy may be used to treat pituitary adenomas. Surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, or a combination of these may be used to treat ectopic ACTH syndrome. best treatment for you depends on the cause of the syndrome.
