Lumber Puncture - symptom, Treatment of Lumber Puncture
A diagnostic procedure, in which a sample of CSF is collected for examination and diagnosis.
The route is also used for the administration of spinal anaesthesia.
The procedure is generally conducted when the patienr is already hospitalized.
Local anaesthesia is used.
A specialized sterile needle is introduced into the spine, between the L2-L3 vertebrae, and advanced till a free drip of CSF emerges from the needle.
The CSF pressure is noted and a sample collected for exammation.
LP is a safe procedure as it is always performed by a doctor who is expert at it.
It is required in the diagnosis of meningitis and other nervous system infections.
It is never performed in the presence of raised intracranial pressure.
