Liver Failure - symptom, Treatment of Liver Failure
Synonym: Hepatic precoma;hepatic encephalopathy
This term is used to describe the features of failing liver function. They may be noticed in a person who has long-standing liver disease like cirrhosis. Or they may occur suddenly following a toxic insult to the liver. Liver failure or hepatic precoma can be reversible if the cause is reversible (some forms of hepatotoxicity). It leads on to coma and death when it is the result of irreversible liver damage.
A person with long-standing liver disease may be on the verge of hepatic precoma if:
- He seems confused, delirious or disoriented in his manner
- He is drowsy most of the time .
- He has tremors, noticeable in the hands
- He seems to be developing prominent veins over his abdomen
- He develops dilated capillaries, seen as a purple network on the skin
- He develops neurological signs like abnormal movements and seizures
- He develops a foul odour on the breath.
These features cry out for a doctor's opinion.
A person with long-standing liver disease may go precoma if:
- There is c .There is into hepatic
- There is a sudden increase of protein in the diet
- There is a bloody vomit (hematemesis)
- There is a generalized illness or infection.
