Infertility - symptom, Treatment of Infertility
Failure to achieve a pregnancy after 2 years of regular unprotected sexual intercourse.
Treatment of Infertility
Both partners are investigated. In the woman, the genital tract is imaged (using Ultrasonography) throughout the ovarian cycle. Laparoscopy may identify tubal disease. The man's semen is analysed for azoospermia. A woman's state of nutrition often decides her fertility.
Under weight women (BMI below 19) and overweight women (BMI over 31) may have irregular or abnormal ovulation. If there are problems in the uterine tubes, these can be corrected surgically. Anovulation may be treated with drugs like clomiphene citrate that stimulate ovulation.
Injectable gonadotrophin hormones also are used to the same end. Both carry a 25% chance of producing multiple pregnancy. If abnormalities are found on semen analysis, various modes of assisted reproduction are offered. In vitro fertilization (IVF) may be an option.
