Mouth Ulcers - symptom, Treatment of Mouth Ulcers
Mouth Ulcers Information
These painful eruptions can occur anywhere on the lips, tongue and inner lining of the mouth and palate. The commonest sort are aphthous ulcers that occur on the wet surfaces of the lips, gums, tongue or cheeks without any apparent cause.
Symptoms of Mouth Ulcers
- They are intensely painful, often making speech, eating and swallowing, difficult.
- Most stay for about a week before they heal spontaneously.
Treatment for Mouth Ulcers
The only treatment needed for moth ulcers is relief of pain and irritation. This can be accomplished by frequent rinsing of the mouth with cold water.
If there is a yellow center to the ulcer, adding a few drops of povidone iodine solution (Betadine) to the rinse (it should be
pale gold in color when you use it) will dean the infected area. Toothpaste and the toothbrush may irritate and the morning
and bedtime ritual should be replaced by repeated rinsing with tepid water.
Intensely painful and persistent oral ulcers should be shown to your doctor at once. There may be a focus of irritation that you may not have noticed: a sharp tooth or an ill-fitting denture, or the ulcer may be caused by a specific disease. There are many illnesses that cause ulcers in the mouth. Your doctor will detect them if present. Treatment specific to the cause will heal the ulcer effectively.
