Myocardial Infarction - symptom, Treatment of Myocardial Infarction

Myocardial Infarction Information

It is also known as Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI). AMI is the term used in this discussion AMI occurs if blood supply to the heart muscle is abruptly cut off when a narrowed atherosclerotic coronary artery is obstructed by a clot.

Slow narrowing of the artery does not cause AMI as there has been enough time for the growth of compensatoryblood vesselsthat re-route bloodpast the narrowed area.

  • An atherosclerotic plaque inside the artery cracks and breaks: this invites clot formation over the site of plaque breakage.
  • As the clot begins to form, powerful chemicals are released locally.
  • These activate more platelets and make the clot increase in size, effectively plugging the artery.

How much is the heart damaged by AMI?

This depends on: the area supplied by the blocked artery, .whether the artery is completely choked off, for how long the blood supply is interrupted, .whether compensatory blood vessels can route blood to the infarcted tissue, and the heart's demand for oxygen.

Symptoms of Myocardial Infarction

  • It is an event- abrupt and clearly defined.
  • The victim may have been comfortable just minutes earlier. However, he or she, may have been unusually stressed either physically (exercise, sexual intercourse, physical effort of any sort) or emotionally (generally negative emotions of anger, sorrow or shock).
  • Pain is the first sign- severe pain, causing the person to cry out, crouch forward, or grab his chest.
  • It may also be felt in the upper abdomen. May be described either as crushing, burning or stabbing pain.
  • Weakness, sweating, nausea, vomiting; dread and anxiety follow the pain.
  • Pain may begin when the person is at rest. If it begins when the person is active, it does not go away on stopping the activity.
  • Pain may not be felt in older persons and in diabetics. These people only experience 'sudden breathlessness.
  • Besides these signs, a person with AMI may also experience a brief loss of consciousness, or confusion, or fatigue.
